Visual design helps people understand fact more easily.
This is an important point that I realized in Tracy Ma’ talk, New York times visual editor. In commercial design, I agree the role of design is no longer to convey feelings, but to to help readers find out and understand the truth more clearly and directly.
It can’t be judged by how beautiful it is, but how conspicuous, direct, clear , complete and view-sharing it is. It should be a logic, rational and rigorous communication, I will regard it as an important subject in my postgraduate period.
The purpose of design is different from making decorations
During watching the presentation by tracy ma,I notice a word she come up with, ‘Superficial Embroidery’. It remind me of what I understood about design when I was just learning it. At that time, I did not pay much attention to the combination of content, and many design methods were derived from my own feelings and visual enjoyment (how to make it looks much beautiful). While this was a great way to develop my graphic skills, but I did not Attaches great importance to the information. Tracy’s work gave me a great enlightenment, make me realize the purpose of design is not to make decoration for scattered things I need to make people feel or find out something(a truth, experience, data, information, etc).
Design should be thought more broadly.
In the past projects, I tend to express my feelings and ideas, but now I gradually realize that if the purpose of learning design is only to express myself, then the energy of design seems to be not enough. That is also what my second project (user research) taught to me.
In these two videos, I found that design has a huge power, it drought something more meaningful to our society, this would remind people notice the problems in our society(e.g How disability integrate into society), afterwards our society would be promoted.
