Task:
Present the work of a practitioner, or a specific project, which deals with ONE of the themes from the morning
presentation i.e POD books, Hybrid Books, Artists’ Books, Bookworks. Students to add this as a blog post and present
it during week 5 tutorials as a mini-presentation. You can include images if you like but not anything that I have already
shown you, 250 words approximately for the blog post.
Based on the second project, I start to have a preliminary understanding of new media publishing, The project I want to share with you this time is ‘The Boat‘, which was created by Nam Le,. Those stories that take us from a tiny fishing village in Australia to a foundering vessel in the South China Sea, in a masterly display of literary virtuosity and feeling. I will I’m going to do the analysis with the method of defining representational affordances of the digital medium(Murray, 2012).

1)Encyclopedic
The story consists of 6 chapters. It tells a complete story through the use of text, moving images, photos, illustrations, animations, music recordings, audio recordings, live images. In each chapter, it uses different computer media formats according to different storylines. A large amount of text information were semantically segmented, classified and narrated in many aspects. With a clear sequence and demonstration pacing and clear navigation, they can create an immersive experience. for example:
In this video, Mai sit on a wooden case with everyone in the boat, This animation is for showing what he was thinking about, when i click the red arrow, i can see everything in his mind, just like i was with him. In his mind, illustrations represented what was happening, photographs represented in his memory, That make the reading experience more sense of participation.
.2)Participatory
The combination of engagement and procedurality leads to interactive functionality, which means that the designer must not only script for the story itself, but also script for the reader. In this story, The interactive part is relatively simple in general, with not much interactive creativity. The interactive process is generally carried out around the promotion of the development of the whole story. On a laptop or tablet, most of my actions are just sliding down, which is a little boring for watching the story itself, but the dynamic visual design can make up for this imperfection.
.3)Spatial
Unlike traditional media, it is similar to experiencing the world and designing Spaces for landscape architects, urban planners and architects, digital media can navigate. It involves process and participation, establishing rules of interaction, such as in the video below, from the main story page to the characters’ thoughts page, as if we were the main characters. When we back to the main story page, we can see the chapter navigation listed on the right of the page, it’s very convienent to turn to different chapter.
4)Procedural
The most important of the four functions supported by the digital media is the processing power of the computer, which allows us to specify conditional, executable instructions. In this story, the tilting and moving effect of text, the moving effect of illustration and the addition of background music are all realized through the program code. This can greatly enhance the reader’s reading experience.
