Project 2 PUBLISHING FORMS

Brief

This is a video of Sleepwalk.

Lyrics:

I can wriggle out of arrangements
You can’t pin me down
I tend to dodge engagements
I’ll see you around
Am I ok?,
Not really, no
I seem to stop and start

Anything I can do let me know
I think I’ll sleepwalk out of my heart
Sleepwalk in the daytime
Access to all fours
Sleepwalk in a straight line
Leading out of the door

Shop through city on a world of eyes
Marvelously dead
These friends of mine need exercise
They sleepwalk instead

No guardian angle intercepts the
Sleepwalkin’ kid
Who sleepwalks the fractured steps
To the sleepwalking skids

The way the private eye goes
About his ancient art.
I can do it with me eyes closed,
Sleepwalk out of my heart

Stop, look, listen to the zombie
The hoochie coochie blues
Black slacks and a crombie
Gucci shoes

A psycho stud and his steady girl
Are heading right this way
When all the footsteps in the world
Sleepwalk away

A victim of ambition
Loitering with intent
The human condition
But who knows what percent

Goodbye from me till now
I never really care
Sleepwalk anyhow
Anywhere

Sleepwalk, talk
Faster and faster
One of these talking birds
Sleepwalk away from disasters
Like they never occured

Too much devotion
Keeps me apart
Sleepwalk in slow motion
Out of my heart

In the creepy zilch of subways
The sub pedestrian plod
Sleepwalk on Sunday
Beneath the domes of God

Sleepwalk on duty
See myself in a pool
A sleepwalking cutie
Sleepwalking fool

Stuck in the afternoon
They do go on
When normal service is resumed
I’ll be sleepwalking young

Secondary Research

Something about John:

Punk poet John Cooper Clarke was born January 25, 1949 in Manchester, England; he first began performing his verse backed by a local folk group called the Ferrets, but in 1977 signed to the Rabid Records label to release the Martin Hannett-produced single “Psycle Sluts.” With his rapid-fire verbal delivery and stinging social commentary, Clarkequickly emerged as the poet laureate of the punk movement, and he read his work as an opening act for groups including the Sex Pistols and the Buzzcocks; an LP, Disguise in Love, followed on Epic in 1978. After supporting Elvis Costello & the Attractions on their legendary Armed Forces tour, Clarke scored a Top 40 hit with the single “Gimmix.”

A live disc, Walking Back to Happiness, appeared in 1979, and a year later he released a second studio effort, Snap, Crackle & Bop. While hugely popular as a stage performer, his records sold poorly, and 1982’s Zip Style Method was his final release for Epic. While still maintaining a high visibility as a live act, Clarke appeared less and less frequently in the years to follow, spending the better part of the ’80s battling an addiction to heroin. (He also spent several years romantically involved with former Velvet Underground chanteuse Nico, no stranger to drug problems herself.) By the following decade, Clarke had cleaned up his act, returning to the stage and contributing regularly to poetry journals. From 2000 onward, Clarke remained relevant through various collaborations and pop culture appearances, including a guest spot on BBC Two’s Never Mind the Buzzcocks and a brief stint as a radio DJ for BBC Radio Six. He didn’t release another full-length record until 2016, when he collaborated with ex-Stranglers member Hugh Cornwell for an album of covers titled This Time It’s Personal.

After getting to know the author, I began to analyze his poem. This Poem is a punk poem, John perform by combining music. The following video is his performance.

Punk Culture:

Punk culture as we see it today began in Britain in the 1970s as a musical rebellion against pre-existing forms of popular music, including progressive rock and heavy metal. In the appeal of punk culture, these pop singers have long been alienated from their fans by overly hero-worshiping idols. Followers of punk culture developed their own dystopian style of music based on underground, minimalist rock and other musical forms. In The field of punk rock, The Sex Pistols and The Ramones are representative bands familiar to people during The Enlightenment of punk music.

Over time, punk became more diverse and less minimalist, as bands like The Clash merged with other underground influences such as ska and rockabilly or even hip-hop, but The message remained The same; It is subversive、, rebellious and anarchic. It draws on such themes as facing social problems, the oppression of the lower class, and so on. Punk culture is a message to society that not everyone is doing well and not everyone is the same. It helps to to exploring the story behind this poem.

There are no specific events clearly stated in the lyrics, most of them are about showing feelings, and there are some interesting phrases such as hoochie coochie blue, dome of god. They might refers to or embodies certain eras. In order to have more information about the background about this poem, I did more research about the year when this poem published.

I found a autobiography called I wanna be yours about John’s life, In this book, he mentioned the album SNAP ,CRACKLE & BOP in which the poem was included, that would be really helpful to understand and Collecting related elements.

After I read this chapter, I have a better understanding of the poem. In order to strengthen my memory, I made some notes, marking the parts that might be the source of inspiration, to further explore.

The whole poem was born when John was travel to Belfast, North Ireland in 80s, which is a special time in UK, The conflict was primarily political and nationalistic, fuel by historical events. It also had an ethnic or sectarian dimension, but despite the use of the terms ‘Protestant‘ and ‘Catholic‘ to refer to the two sides, it was not a religious conflict. A key issue was the status of Northern IrelandUnionists and loyalists, who for historical reasons were mostly Ulster Protestants, wanted Northern Ireland to remain within the United KingdomIrish nationalists and republicans, who were mostly Irish Catholics, wanted Northern Ireland to leave the United Kingdom and join a united Ireland. The main participants in the Troubles were republican paramilitaries such as the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) and the Irish National Liberation Army (INLA)

Based on my research of the book, notes, and related background, I started to think about which form of publication i will use. Based on the briefing and class, I re-established a new concept of publishing. I found that:

I need to develop my ability to perform and executing conditional behavior. It will no longer be present as a traditional paper book or as a full-text e-book. It needs to be present in an electronic device, maybe a screen or some other ancillary device, then make connection with the readers.

All the forms of expression depend on the background, content, relative data collection, thoughts and the tone of the work through artistic creation way, such as animation, video, illustration, 3D, virtual reality, game, web remix even robot to make it more dynamic, vivid and interesting to help readers understand what the writers trying to express and to improve the reading experience.

So in this project, I am going to publish this poem in the form of video book. He retains the character of the book, but he is more alive than the book.

My inspiration came from two electronic publications, The first one called The Boat, I made a deep analysis based on the theory of Inventing The Medium written by Janet H Murray on this short novel in Blog2.

The second one called Pine Point:

It is a project which lead us to discover what happens when an entire community is erased from the map. In this project, interactions are designed in a very interesting way. It runs through the plot like a collage notepad, which made me start to think about whether if i can make some interaction in my video, still learning …

After that, I start to sketch my own work.

Initial Idea

Storyboard:

I use After Effect as my main tool to make my video. Firstly, i want to try a new tool that i didn’t use before, that made my work much vivid than making a paper-base book for me. Secondly, it met the need of spreading on electronic products, which is a skill that i want to develop in the future.
